Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine worships the God of learning called Michizane Sugawara.

At Terakoya, private elementary schools which spread through much of Japan during the Edo Era, used to worship Michizane Sugawara and Tenjin.
Kitano Tenman-gu is known as a Shinto shrine for the accomplishment of studies and progress of the military arts. It is said that there are approximately 12,000 affiliated shrines all over the country.

Inside of the Shinto shrine grounds are not only the main shrine, a national treasure, and Sanko Gate, an important cultural property, but also 51 smaller shrines called Setsumatsusha.

You can pray at these setsumatsusya for such things as forestry, exercise, rood safety as well as success in studies and progress in the military arts.
In addition, ornamental plums bloom in the plum garden in the spring, and the beautiful mapke leaues changing colors attract many people and please a lot of passers by in the fall.
